Born in 1913, Mead attended University of California at Berkeley and Los Angeles, earning his Bacholars and Masters degree. He spent much of his childhood in Mexico. He served the United States Office of Strategic Services during the 1940s, surveying Latin American periodicals for matters relating to American intelligence interests. After obtaining his PhD with a thesis on Peruvian essayist Manuel Gonzalez Prada, he accepted a position in Hispanic and Latin American literature at the University ...
